UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
