An defense official has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader defence environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
