As Beachgoers Fled Danger, Popular Picture Shows Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected pops ringing out across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. The person was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of instances of heroism in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for many victims.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the site of the attack transforming into a impromptu medical station. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen helping out, including entering the surf to rescue people in distress.

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the shooting began right into late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a mayor.
